However, having a common ground agreeenet he was a free agent to the Detroit Lions as a wide receiver after he had participated in the rookie mini-camp as a tryout player. Later on the 3rd of September 2016, Ellis was signed to the Lions eight man practice squad.
However, after Devalle spent almost the whole of the 2008 season out of football, on the 31st of December 2008, he was signed for a future contract by the Cleveland Browns. Unfortunately, his contract was waived on the 26th of July 2009.

In addition to his acting career, Ellis also played a recurring role after he was featured in the BET series, Bigger, from 2019 to 2021, as well as guest-starring on The Equalizer movie. Moreover, he also made an appearance in the 2022 thriller film Single Black Female for Lifetime, where he starred opposite Raven Goodwin and Amber Riley.
Notably, it was revealed in 2021 that BET+ ordered Zatima, a spin-off which he was going to star in with Ellis and Crystal Renee Hayslett, which was later released in 2022.
